This is a shaman type guy holding a bowl that harkens back to the Mimbres bowls. The Mimbres people buried a person with a bowl painted with their death story. Then they made a hole in the bowl so the spirit could escape. This bowl doesn't have a hole, nor does it depict a death, but that was the inspiration here. The little pile of stuff on his leg is clay. The bird is his familiar and spirit guide.
